When it’s time to change

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Welcome to the first week of 2010! How many New Year’s resolutions did you make? How many have you already started avoiding? Uh-huh. That’s what we thought. But not to worry. There’s still time (360 days, to be exact) to start working toward your goals, whatever they may be.

The first step? Acceptance. A resolution is usually the result of the need or desire to change a pattern that is not suiting you anymore. You may want to quit a bad habit, start following a healthier diet, get your office organized…the list goes on and on. Resolutions are hard because change can be scary. Yes, we seem to be hard-wired to resist change, even when it’s self-induced. It’s time to just accept it.

The good news? Just because you’ve made a resolution to change something in your life, this does not mean that you have to like it right off the bat. Nope. You have the right to think change is a nasty, foul mouthed, hairy beast. Because it often is. And the older you get, the smellier change’s breath can become. The trick is to remember that the sooner you acknowledge change for what it is, the easier the steps toward reaching your ultimate goal will become. That’s when the beast reveals its beauty.
