It is said that the month of ‘January’ is named after the god Janus, a slightly conflicted old guy who is commonly depicted with two faces — one gazing into the future and one looking toward the past. If Janus looks how you feel, you are not alone. The holidays are over and 2010 has ended, so many of us are taking stock of what we have and have not achieved over the 12 months of yore. Yet a new year has recently begun, so we are also mentally tuned into all things that are still to come. It does sound quite confusing, doesn’t it? So before your two heads start spinning, we thought it might be helpful to offer a little advice on how to quell the January crazies. It’s simple stuff, like finding good mood foods to indulge in and paying special attention to your exercise and sleep patterns. Most of all, while New Year’s resolutions are helpful, don’t get stuck inside the box that they can create. Get creative with your positive changes, and don’t beat yourself up if you happen to fall off the wagon now and again. Remember to relish in the fact that you have a brand new year ahead of you. And with any luck, you’ll be back to one, single, forward-looking face by February.
