Well read

I always remember a quote from C.S. Lewis I heard in my days as an English Literature student: “We read to know that we are not alone.” This quote resurfaced when I read this recent Health article.

So I’m not the only one who worries and lugs around feelings of anxiousness and stress these days? Well tickle me pink! This fact is something I should probably just know. But in our solitary lives, we often forget that our feelings are more universal to the human condition than we realize. And with the social climate today (sloping economy, greater workloads, layoffs, flu season, yadda yadda yadda) our condition is all the more stressed, depressed, anxious and wound up with hand-clenching fretfulness. And just to add a little insult to injury, women are hard-wired to worry more. It’s science.

So where’s the hope? It’s still here. How do you find joy amidst your angst? You just have to take the time to find it. Physical movement is one great means to this end:

“Physical activity is a power ful ally to greater well-being and joy. ‘Exercise, yoga, or any kind of regular movement helps get you out of your head…In addition to being a healthy activity, it triggers endorphins that have a profound effect on lifting your spirits. It makes you come alive.’ ”

So we read to know that we just gotta get out of our heads once in a while. And do more yoga.
